Be Kind-Simple Words to Start the Week

I will start my week with today’s sermon theme in my heart and my head–BE KIND.  Simple yet imagine if everyone in the world would remember to be kind to everyone and then proceed to see what happens…politicians out there take note and quit snipping at each other and be kind to one another and work it out.  Get stuff done that helps those who elected you…just saying.  And not just politicians–I’m constantly surprised in the workplace by people who are blatantly unkind to their peers.  HELLO you people who do that, your unkind behavior doesn’t make anyone feel good, including you, or get anything accomplished.  It’s a lose-lose experience for all involved.  So BE KIND this week and hopefully you and everyone you interact with will have a happy and prosperous week.  I hope to!

Speaking of the sermon, we went back to our local First Church today and got to have “Pizza with the Pastor” to get to know more about their church programs.  Sitting in a small conference room, 10 people and the pastor, the diversity of the groups was interesting to say the least.  The church partners to run a homeless shelter for men as well as provide free breakfasts on Sunday to about 300 people every week.  I’m looking forward to volunteering and helping in any way I can as I truly believe there is no better way to help others than providing food and shelter.  In our group were two of the homeless men who used the shelter.  Hearing their backgrounds and touching on their issues, I was able to get a glimpse into the struggles they faced daily.  As one guy nodded off after eating some pizza and enjoying the warm surroundings, we continued to share our religious paths, with Thom always drawing smiles with his Catholic upbringing stories.  Also getting smiles are the puppies in the pews as our church is “pro pet” and dogs are welcome to attend with their owners.  No one has complained yet so Pastor is going with it until someone does.  I noticed Cowboy, the white cutie in the next pew, really had his tail wagging when we were singing hymns.  So Seattle!  Unfortunately, Izaak and Thor aren’t quite so well behaved so they won’t be attending services anytime soon but we may throw caution to the wind and let them attend the Blessing of the Pets coming up soon…stay tuned for stories on that adventure.

My backyard
My backyard

As far as the rest of my lazy weekend, I got to spend some quality time with the “boys” who need constant walking in our backyard, the Seattle Center.  We love the lights at night, the fountain spouting to music and the vitality of this gem of a park for Seattlites to enjoy.  Blessed we are to live so near to enjoy it daily.

Walking Izaak in the rain to his favorite lawn area by the fountains to do his business, I suddenly reached for the baggies and realized Thom had used the last one the previous night.  Oops….now most people would just forget about it but we actually went back a little later on the next walk and hunted down his business so we could pick it up.  Wish everyone was as conscientious!

On the walk home looking at the debris left over from a busy Saturday night of partying, I think I may have to get one of those metal handheld picker-uppers to keep the streets clean in my neighborhood.  I’m kind of OCD (no laughing please) and can’t stand seeing dirty streets and, unlike China, there are no street sweepers on every block to maintain the appearance.  I do miss many other aspects of Chinese life.  So, maybe I’ll start a trend by pitching in to keep our streets looking good. Think anyone will help me???

Talking with families, friends and going to the gym rounded out a truly relaxing weekend capped off with watching the Grammy’s–who else always loves the unique pairings of music icons that you just don’t see anywhere else??  Hoping this year is no different and we see some truly spectacular performances.  Here’s also hoping that Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj used LOTS of tape on those “cleavage cut to their navel” dresses they have on or there will be nipples galore at the Grammys!  No. Thank. You.

When the poodle walked up the aisle, I knew I had found my Church!

Only in Seattle folks!  We finally got our butts out of bed quick enough to seek out a new Church in our neighborhood.  Methodist this time, though we are non-denominational in our church preference, usually attending the “church of convenience” which this definitely qualifies for being in our lower Queen Anne neighborhood.  The First United Methodist Church is the oldest one in Seattle, established in 1853 and it embraces diversity like no other as well as serving the many homeless with shelter and food.  I can get behind all of that in a big way so off we went this morning to check it out.

Seahawks Sunday!
Seahawks Sunday!

After seeing the same sex couples, homeless, families, older couples and finally, the cherry on the church cake, the poodle being led up the aisle by a guy in his Seahawks jersey, all worshipping and praising God, I started to tear up and feel like I was home.  The green and blue motif also created special ambience, because, of course, it was Seahawks Sunday with a 12th man sign on the alter and the reverend resplendent in green and blue necklaces and stole.  GO HAWKS!   After the handbell choir performed and a male barbershop quartet, the prayers for church members included a prayer to stop the Koch brothers from buying the 2016 Presidential election.  WOW!  Never have I heard a church take such a stance publicly from the pulpit.  You go girl, Rev. Sharon Moe!

At the end of the service, the congregation formed a large circle “huddle” to take a stance against human sex trafficking.  It seems that the Super Bowl encourages this type of thing.  So sad and wrong on every level.  I hope that we can get involved and help with their homeless shelter and food service.  This is our neighborhood and people here need help.  Too often we forget how blessed we are and that so many need just a hot meal and a place to rest their head that is safe and dry.  Yes, I’m praying for the Seattle Seahawks to do well but, win or lose, life will go on and I will appreciate each and every moment I get to be with my wonderful family.  Going to church really helps me refocus and see the world in a new light and be content.  I loved the message on the flyer today:  “God of the ages, to whom the hours are nothing and everything: may I know each moment as a sacred guest to be welcomed, to be savored, to be sent with a blessing.”. Amen and GO HAWKS!

Fashion Challenge of the Week-Tax Prep Outfit

Busy week filled with challenges, both work and fashion.  What exactly does one wear to work on taxes??  January is all about dieting and taxes–oh boy what a fun month!  Trying to squeeze into those tight jeans and squeeze out some money while you’re at it.  I.  HATE.  TAXES.  Having to track down all the forms and document my crazy messy financial life for the last 12 months is HELL.  This year my taxes will be super complicated with living in China AND the US, several rental properties, selling some land and starting two businesses.  Wait, what’s that loud noise….I think I just heard my accountant’s head explode.  Luckily, I have company assistance this year and then next year we go back to Thom’s childhood friend Ronnie who always has done our taxes.  I wish everyone luck as we all wade through trying to make sense of it all.  DAMN, Where’s my wine???

So, fashion was fun this week as I get to the end of the month of my fashion challenge.  Yes, I do have too many clothes and look forward to my beautiful daughter Hannah visiting so she can raid my closet and take some with her.  More room for new stuff!  Let the shopping begin.

It’s been good to push myself out of my rut of wearing the favorite stuff week after week.  I’ve enjoyed seeing how I can combine new pieces with my endless supply of scarves and necklaces.  Starting my new online business, Decorate Your Neck, is a lifelong dream realized.  I look forward to placing my Spring order soon and bringing even more fun and affordable necklaces and scarves to customers everywhere.  I’m still working on a marketing plan but know that this is the business I was always meant to run.  No one loves accessories more than me!

One day I put together a sweater that I found at a thrift store with my burgundy skull scarf from my store and favorite burgundy jeans with studded shoes.  My boss remarked that I was channeling the 60’s, which was slightly insulting, but whatever… she’s the boss, right?  I’m all for people wearing whatever they feel good in and not judging so I’ll just take that as a backhanded (way, way back) compliment and move on with my fashion life.  I wore jeans ALOT this week because I was in meetings where everyone was very casual.  I’m looking forward to rocking the heels, skirts and pearls next week.  Watch out, Dallas, here I come!  I travel for a couple of days, back for a week to end the month and then off to sunny Scottsdale, after the Super Bowl where the Seahawks WILL WIN.  Those Patriots have all kinds of bad underinflated karma blowing in their direction so I’m fairly confident that the honest team will prevail.  GO HAWKS!

Fashion Challenge is a Challenge

Days 14-18 of the Fashion Challenge were a challenge.  No excuses but between a trip to Canada, being assigned an additional “stretch” assignment on top of my other job, blah/blah/blah….it didn’t leave time for writing, one of my true joys in life.  So, I’m back now and ready to rock the fashion challenge in the upcoming week.  Today, however, I didn’t even get out of my PJ’s except to throw on my Seahawks jersey to watch the most amazing football game ever.  Lesson reinforced from the come-from-behind story of the Seahawks is that you must never, EVER give up.  Russell Wilson crying and praying on the sidelines made me tear up as well and his inspirational post-game discussion highlighted how, despite playing truly horrible for most of the game, he kept a positive attitude leading his team to the win when it would have been easier to give up or make excuses.  I hope the Seahawks do win the Super Bowl just to recognize their teamwork and dedication.  Oh, and we hate the Patriots and Tom Brady as well.  Arrogance doesn’t play well with me.

But, on to fashion.  I don’t have any fashion tips to share today except to say that EVERYONE needs to have a “PJ only day” once in awhile and not bother with getting dressed or leaving the house.  Though I did work all day on my new project, at least I was able to do it in my own beautiful cozy home surrounded by my love and my puppies and comfy as all get out.  But earlier in the week after I made my way back from Canada, I did manage to dress appropriately wearing new fashion outfits from my too-packed closet.  I especially loved wearing the green knit shirt that I had made to order in Shanghai.  For only $20 US, I took in my favorite Michael Kors shirt and they replicated it for me with a few modifications in the fabric/colors I picked.  I only got green and black and wish I had gotten more colors while I was at it.  It fits like a glove and is so flattering that it is my “go to” shirt to make me feel good for important meetings.  Of course, coming home to my puppies at the end of the night and cuddling makes all my stress go away.  I highly recommend “puppy therapy” if you are having a stressful day or just need some unconditional love.  When life gets too busy and you forget what’s important, the wagging of a tail and nuzzle of a cold nose will set you on the right path again.  Life is short but puppy love knows no bounds.  Thank goodness for dogs!

Day Nine-Finally Friday!

Cheers to Friday!  Unlike most others at the office today, I didn’t sport a Seattle Seahawks outfit.  No, I wasn’t staging a protest or taking an anti-football stand.  I just don’t feel comfortable wearing a football jersey to the office.  I’m not judging others-more football power to them all but it’s just not my style.  I’ll wear my skirt and pearls, thank you very much, and still root for the Seahawks!

Cheers to Friday!
Cheers to Friday!

So besides the gorgeous grey and white pearl necklace that I got for practically nothing at the Pearl Shop at the AP Market in Shanghai (seriously $15 or less for real pearls!), I was also so happy to wear my custom made shirt that has a seriously flattering neckline that makes even me look good-MIRACLE SHIRT!  When it works, duplicate it!  My favorite Michael Kors shirt wasn’t getting any younger so before it died, I took it to the South Bund Fabric Market in Shanghai while we lived there and had them duplicate it, custom made to my size, and picked the colors/fabric and altered a few other items to really make it one of a kind.  The result was the most comfortable and good looking shirt that I own, all for $20 US.  BARGAIN!  I just wish I had more made while I was there.  I got one shirt in black and one in green.  My friend, Patti, loved mine so much that she went while she was there with us and got one too.

Paired with my comfy stripe knit skirt, tights and my classic Frye boots, it was the perfect Friday outfit–work and then dinner out at a local Thai place to celebrate a new challenge given to me at work today.  Busy times ahead but, for now, I’m ready for the Seahawks to win on Saturday and, yes, I’ll be wearing my football jersey which I find totally appropriate for a weekend ensemble.  Pictures to come–have to decide what scarf matches my Seahawks shirt!

Day Six Fashion Challenge-Classy Yet Sassy

So, what do you wear when you have to catch the 6:40 a.m. shuttle for a “what the Hell were they thinking when they scheduled it this early” morning meeting?  Well, first, you take time the night before to plan out your outfit so you don’t look like a fashion “don’t”.  Seriously, I have been lazy and not done this in the past and ended up looking not so good and that’s being too nice.  I also learned the hard way to do that all important bathroom mirror check when I get to work to avoid wearing my dress backwards (yes, for an important meeting)and, yes, that really happened.  Now I am a little more aware and try to always take a moment to check for major faux pas before facing the boss.  I have caught myself sporting only one earring, holes in tights, etc. and managed a quick wardrobe tweak to fix quickly before I embarrass myself AGAIN.  Live and learn!

Banana Republic both classy and sassy
Banana Republic both classy and sassy

But this morning I had prepped the night before and purposely picked my new Banana Republic black sweater (50% off!) that was light but warm with a cutout back detail that was highlighted by the white shirt underneath.  Now, this was no ordinary boring white shirt.  This was my custom made, fits like a glove, French cuff cotton shirt that I designed in Shanghai, adding print details to the collar and underside of the cuffs.  I love it and only wish I had bought a few more while I lived in Shanghai.

Add in the dragon cuff links that I bargained hard to get for less than $10 at the South Bund Fabric Mart in Shanghai and the bold turquoise Banana Republic necklace that always garners major compliments (bought last year on sale) and I was feeling good despite the early call.

Classy black pants from Nordstrom’s and my comfy Dansko studded heels made this a great outfit for a very long work day.  Now, off to plan my outfit for Day 7 so I look decent despite another early call.  Good night!

Day Three of 30 Day Fashion Challenge

A grey, rainy Saturday calls for fashion to match.  So, on Day Three of my fashion challenge to wear a new outfit every day this month, out came the grey tones in the form of a Merona grey balloon cozy cardigan that Hannah picked out for me awhile ago and the grey V-neck t-shirt that she also sourced for me at the Boise thrift store for a few bucks.  I love having her as my personal shopper because she has such a good eye for fashion AND she loves a bargain.  I taught her well–fashion isn’t about how much you spend but how you put it all together no matter the price you pay.

Day Three in grey tones rocking a bicycle scarf
Day Three in grey tones rocking a bicycle scarf

Of course, no outfit is complete without a necklace and scarf so I wound my grey bicycle scarf around the gorgeous silver Chinese inspired necklace that James got me for Christmas.  Done!  Off we went to run errands after we borrowed my son’s car (really my old car) that is now held together with plastic tape and a prayer.  We noticed another large dent and the side mirror pretty much hanging off the side, to which James replied when asked what happened, that he had a run in with a very solid pillar that got in his way.  Oops!  We were in China at the time of impact last year so he never thought to tell us since we had already warned him that there would be no further repairs to this 19 year old car–Infiniti makes a great car but it can’t run forever. But, for now, it got us to Ikea to buy some final home stuff we needed and to Lenscrafters for new glasses.  We get around Seattle without a car most of the time using Car2Go, Zipcar, Uber, our own two feet and an Orca card but it’s nice to borrow our own wheels sometimes. Having James over to puppy sit Thor and Izaac while we ran around town was an added bonus.  They love him and give him LOTS of puppy love while he was here.  We bribed him to stay for dinner by promising Chinese food, which is not at all like food in China but still yummy.  Good to be back in Seattle with family close by!

Thor’s Incredible Improbable Journey

From his very humble beginnings in China as the runt of the litter, riddled with illness and unwanted by everyone including his mama, by all measures, Thor should not have even lived let alone be now enjoying life in Seattle.  Rescued by a kind expat who found him in the Shanghai stable where she rode horses, he was given a second chance at life.  However, she almost immediately faced a life crisis of her own when she had to leave China quickly due to personal issues.  She reached out via our apartment complex’s Shimao Riviera Facebook group that Thom belonged to and improbably we became foster parents to a Chinese rescue dog in July 2014.

Teeny tiny Thor barely weighed a pound when we got walks between James' legs
Teeny tiny Thor barely weighed a pound when we got him. Here, he explores walking between the legs of the giant, otherwise known as my son James.

Thom quickly started taking Thor to the vet to do whatever it took to nurse the little one pounder back to health.  I had been in the U.S. on business and came home to meet the little ball of fur that would steal our hearts despite all the odds against him.  Sequestered inside for the first few months as he got his shots, we were finally able to take him outside at about four months old.  Teaching him to climb stairs was vastly amusing and the look on his fuzzy face when he met his first cat, who promptly hissed at him, was priceless.  Of course when we found out that we were repatriating to the U.S. in October, we knew Thor had to come too.  Though we feared what a transatlantic flight experience would be like with a puppy, we prayed heavily and, miraculously, he silently sat underneath the seat and was perfect the whole trip to the point we were poking him to see if he was still alive he was so quiet.  Amazing!

What a face!
What a face!

Not that Thor is always perfect.  Last week, as we transitioned from our temporary apartment to our new digs in Seattle, he went through a “I’ll piss on Thom”  rampage every day as his teeny tiny bladder needs what feels like constant attention vs. his older brother, Izaak, who only needs walked a couple times a day.  Thor’s more of a “walk me every two hours or I’ll piss on you” type of dog.  Thom especially hopes his bladder grows stronger quickly as he ages but, in the meantime, water is regulated and walks are frequent.  He is just getting old enough to be fixed so, on Valentine’s Day as is our custom on this romantic day with our dogs, we will take him to the vet to be changed forever.  Maybe that will help?  Here’s hoping!

Cuddle buddies!
Cuddle buddies!

Thor’s brother, Izaak, our eight year old Vizsla who stayed with our daughter while we were living in China, has become his new chew toy and constant partner in crime.  Izaak has taught Thor to raid our trash cans.  They also just love to chew on toilet paper right off the roll-yum, yum.  Thor can only dream of getting big enough to eat off the kitchen counters and drink out of the toilets like Izaak can do if left unmonitored.   They love chasing each other, lapping the apartment.  Our neighbor below us doesn’t find it nearly as fun and pounds on his ceiling (with a broom??)  to show his displeasure.   Too bad grumpy person–dogs just LOVE to have fun and while Thor at four pounds doesn’t sound like the thundering herd, Izaak topping out at 50+ pounds probably does sounds like a small pony galloping around.   So sorry!  Thor has also become the consummate sock stealer and only needs a second left alone to take off and hide under the couch to chew on his ill gotten goods.  Our pet sitter, Madeline, found out the hard way as she must have left the dynamic duo alone for a few minutes, in which time Thor stole her socks while Izaak collapsed on our bed/pillows for a quick nap-check out this tag team of devious dogs below.  P.S.  Izaak chose Thom’s pillow to park his ass and I got doggy drool on my pillow.  Ahhhh, being a pet owner is fun.

Pink Doors and Tarot Cards Too

“This is your card-The Hermit.  You must be alone to be happy–there are times you just need to stay away from everyone and enjoy your books.  Your partner must be very understanding.”  Why, yes he is, dear Tarot Card Lady.  Some might say Thom is a saint to put up with me while others say he is the luckiest guy on the planet (depends on the day) but he does certainly know me well enough to ascertain when I need my alone time AND my wine.

After my friend Kurt heard I was going to the Pink Door, a famous watering hole/restaurant near Pike Place Market, he suggested I go early to get a Tarot Reading.  I have never had a Tarot card reading but after my palm reading experience on a dark street in Kowloon, Hong Kong just a few months ago, I am open to new adventures so bring it on….

The Hermit=Me
The Hermit=Me

Further interpretation of my card was being alone but not lonely; lighting the way for others; being a wise teacher and being able to communicate with animals–yes, I’m a moose whisperer.  Always have been!  The Hermit is ruled by Virgo, which of course I am to the tenth degree.  While I wouldn’t describe myself as a Hermit, chords of truth rang out as I watched the cards unfold and be interpreted.  What fun!

As I shuffled the large deck of cards, Eugenia explained that there were a total of 78 cards with 22 major cards and 56 minor cards.  The  Major Ariana (arcana means secrets) cards that were turned over for me were:  The Fool (new beginnings and a new journey-you don’t say!), The Hanged Man (seeing life from a new perspective-maybe from another country??), The Hermit (soul searching and introspection), Judgment (change and transformation)

The Hanged Man=Contemplation & Inner Harmony
The Hanged Man=Contemplation & Inner Harmony

Encouraging that the cards were feeling my HUGE change of new countries, new homes, new furniture, new jobs and the change just keeps coming.  How could the cards NOT feel it???  They were practically flipping over by themselves to reinforce what I already know and am living–life is one big opportunity to embrace and experience.  Why be boring???  The woman bound with not so tight scarf and ropes (hello, 50 Shades, right?) looking to break free and the dude covered in keys signifying a change of address perhaps?? Yep, that’s me alright–nothing can tie me down and the keys just keep adding up as we move from one cool place to the next but always with a water view.

Swords=The Ties That Bind Me
Swords=The Ties That Bind Me

As we came to the end of the nine cards she was going to share as my reading, the Judgment card was revealed.  This signified my rebirth, awakening a part of me that has been dormant but always wanted to come out but never had time.  Immediately coming to mind was my soon-to-be venture as an entrepreneur running my own business (in my spare time) which has always been a dream of mine, put off by no time until now.  More to come on this later but it will be fun, fun, fun!

After the last card was read, I finally admitted to Eugenia that I had just moved from China, started a new job and found a new apartment this month.  She quickly flipped a few more cards as she was getting a strong feeling that I wasn’t done moving yet.  Satisfied by what she saw at a glance, she reassured me that I could unpack my bags and stay for a year or two in Seattle before we moved on to a new location, probably international by what she saw.  Hmmm…. who knows where we could end up??  May have to come back for another reading to see where our next adventure will take us.

Need to peer into your past or future?  Eugenia Van Vliet can be found in the bar at the Pink Door Sundays through Thursday 5 to 7:30 p.m.  The cost is $30 for 30 minutes of discovery.  You can make reservations with her at evanvliet@Comcast.net or just drop by and hope she has an opening.  Whether you believe the cards or not, it’s an interesting journey with Eugenia, who is smart and knows her stuff.  Enjoy!

Seattle Underground Tour Educates and Entertains

I have always wanted to take the Seattle Underground Tour-it just sounded mysterious and unique.  So, FINALLY, after living here for three years (except for our last year in China), we finally acted on a winter special on GroupOn to take to the subterranean underbelly of Seattle and experience it for ourselves.

Getting ready to start the BeneathTheStreets tour in Seattle.
Getting ready to start the BeneathTheStreets tour in Seattle.

There are four different Underground Tours in Seattle but for this outing we chose the History Tour during the day with Beneath The Streets, http://www.beneath-the-streets.com.  There are others including a night ghost tour and less educational ones but hey, when the GroupOn presents a screaming deal, who am I to say “No”.  So with our intrepid guide, Emily, educating us and making us laugh along the way, I learned more in one hour about Seattle history than I had ever imagined.  Sure, I vaguely knew about the Gold Rush but didn’t realize that it was the reason for Seattle’s birth and existence.  History was not my best subject in school and I’m an idiot when it comes to dates and major events in all history, foreign and domestic, but this tour I enjoyed when not dodging rats.

Yes, when you are navigating the underground beneath the streets of Seattle within cavernous spaces that have never been cleaned out from the roaring 1920’s saloon days and prior, you have entered Rat Heaven.  Emily warned us in a joking way that we might see “robot” rats and that the huge rat traps we saw were just props but we all knew Emily was preparing us for the real deal.  Sure enough, halfway into a large tunnel, the biggest rat (really a small pony) scuttled across the floor in front of our groups and the screaming began.  Get out the saddle because Mr. Rat’s tail was as long as our puppy Thor’s entire body.  All I can say is that the restaurants in the neighborhood must cook some seriously fattening food because Mr. Rat didn’t have any ribs showing–he was well fed.WP_20141115_010 1

But, enough of the rodent diversion and back to the tour–due to all kinds of issues with the water table being where the founding fathers of Seattle wanted to build the port city, they raised their streets, leaving the lower sidewalks intact with ladders to climb down into them until the sidewalks also had to move to higher ground due to more people dying from falling into them than the great fire that leveled the earlier downtown area.  Oops–watch where you step!  I’m shocked no savvy developer has bought these underground spaces to make them into clubs and trendy cocktail bars but I’m sure they will soon.  We did end our tour in the Comedy Underground space, which we will have to check out next.  Pioneer Square, where the tunnels are located, is getting gentrified with oh so trendy food choices and loft apartments.  We actually thought about moving to this area but it’s not quite living friendly yet with groceries and such.  It needs to evolve a little more before I’ll move here.  Still, if you want to experience Seattle history and enjoy a truly urban environment, this is the place to be on a sunny Seattle day.
